"The idea that the largest art collection doesn’t hang in museums, but simply above people’s couches, wouldn’t let go of me. That contrast fascinated me endlessly. I kept thinking about it and decided: I have to share this. What started as an idea is now growing into a visual online platform, and who knows, maybe something tangible in the future."
The thought that the largest art collection doesn’t hang in museums, but simply above people’s couches, kept echoing in my mind. It was precisely this contrast that fascinated me so much that I decided to explore whether I could bring this idea to life visually.
This is how in—art—out came into being: a platform where art lives in homes, and where the stories behind the works are just as valuable as the artworks themselves.
My own love for art began with curiosity. Catawiki was the catalyst: I wanted to understand how the platform worked, had a bit of money to spend, and bought my first artwork. Well, actually two artworks: a drawing by Anton Heyboer and a mixed media piece by Peter Klashorst. The latter no longer hangs in our home — my wife had trouble with a woman on the wall who always seemed to be ‘watching’ her…
Yet it wasn’t that purchase that fully drew me into the art world. That was Super Nurse by street artist FAKE. I saw him on a talk show discussing his new screen print. I had to have it. Since then, there has been no turning back. I follow artists, visit exhibitions, and scour Marktplaats, Instagram, and obscure auction platforms daily.
My collection has since become a vibrant mix of street art, stencil work, and modern graphics, with a clear preference for portraits and the work of Piet Parra. My home doesn’t feel like a museum — it’s too lively, too lived-in for that — but maybe like a small gallery, where art and interior design enhance each other.
in—art—out is my way of making the stories behind all these living-room collections visible. We ask five questions to collectors, artists, and designers. We step inside their homes, listen to their stories, and let ourselves be surprised.
Whether you have a wall full of art or are just starting your collection, if you want to share your story or just have a good conversation, reach out. Because maybe the most beautiful art collection is hanging in your home, and together, we might just be building the largest art collection in the Netherlands and beyond…

Do you have an art collection to share?
The Rijks, MoMA and Moco: all incredibly impressive. But are they really the largest art collections? Probably not. The biggest collection lives in people’s homes, often right above the sofa. With five questions in hand, I step inside the spaces of collectors, designers and artists. Get inspired by their collections, the stories behind them, and discover new (contemporary) movements and artists.
I’m Marcel. Do you have a collection to share, or just feel like having a good conversation? Get in touch. Together, we form in—art—out the largest art collection in the Netherlands… and maybe even beyond.
